DIY: Entryway Hat Wall

I have never considered myself much of a hat person. They always looked amazing on other people but never felt like something I could pull off myself. That is until, while pregnant with my daughter, I started to develop Melasma. It's a type of hyperpigmentation commonly referred to as the mask of pregnancy and SPF alone wasn't enough to prevent it from getting worse. To this day, anytime I step out in the sun it tends to flare up. So I became a hat person out of necessity, but honestly... I love it.
I loved the look of hat walls when I first spotted them on Pinterest, and I needed something to fill the space over the bench on our stair landing (which functions as our entryway), so I decided what better reminder to grab one on the way out the door?
We're renters, so I try to keep holes in the wall to the absolute minimum (when you change things up as often as I do this becomes particularly important) so I went with Command hooks for this project. Guys, I went from kind of "meh" about them to a complete devotee... I've used them to hang almost anything you can imagine and have also removed many with nary a mark.
To get started, I laid my hats out on the floor and snapped a quick shot to get an idea of how I wanted to arrange them; then I taped up paper in roughly the same size to create a template on the wall.
I then hung the command hooks in the spot I had marked with the paper, removed the templates and let them set for an hour (I'm impatient, but I can attest this step matters if you don't want things falling down.) Hats are pretty light, so I selected small hooks that hold up to one pound.
Finally, I hung the hats and was done! I want to grow my collection a bit, and I love how quickly I can add to this over time. It's a nice combination of form and function and less expected than art, which would have felt awkward in this space.
